‘You have to eat breakfast; you can’t always just have coffee and go.’
Ever since his parents moved in, they had to face this every morning. She gave an awkward smile as she sat at the table.
‘Yira, you’re off on a business trip today, when do you get back?’ Gye-eul’s mother asked as she placed small bowls of rice before Yira and Gye-eul. Gye-eul was eating his soup expressionlessly.
‘The day after tomorrow.’
‘Oh good, we wouldn’t have left by then.’ Gye-eul’s mother said with smile.
Yira looked at her watch anxiously; it was fifteen minutes left until Kevin arrived to pick her up. Although, she had told him he didn’t have to come. He had been insistent. Kevin didn’t know she lived with Gye-eul had thought she had refused his gesture out of politeness.
‘What’s wrong? Is Yoon picking you up?’ Gye-eul asked noticing her restlessness. Though his heart was burning with jealousy, he regarded her as he ate with a nonchalant expression.
‘Team leader Yoon?’ Gye-eul’s mother said, her eyes lighting with curiosity. Gye-eul parents exchanged glances.
‘Is this person a man?’
Yira nodded.
‘And it’s just the two of you?’
‘Yes.’ She replied.
No wonder. His parents turned to look at him in dawning. (Zuben: Do his parent know how he feels about her?)
There was a beep, it was Yira’s phone. Gye-eul continued to eat. Yira picked up and phone and started to rise.
‘He’s outside. I’ll be going.’ Yira said.
‘Alright, take care.’ Gye-eul’s mother said with an eye on Gye-eul, but he didn’t look up.
Was he being strange because she told him to keep their relationship a secret from his parents? Yira wondered as she left the house.
When Yira left his mother went to peep at Yira.
‘Oh, is that him?’ She asked no one in particular, ‘He’s pretty handsome, and he seems to have good manners.’ She continued as she watched Kevin put away Yira’s carry-case and open the passenger door for her. (Zuben: Mom, why you like this now? It’s not good oh)
She turned round to Gye-eul, ‘Why did you allow them to go on a business trip by themselves?’
Gye-eul did not reply but continued to eat his breakfast.
‘This Yoon person; is he single?’ she pressed on.
Gye-eul rose from his seat, placed his spoon down beside his bowl and left the table to his bedroom. He didn’t understand why his mother was asking these irritating questions.
‘Such a bother,’ he said out loud.
