25 Echoing Howls at Dusk.

‘Everyone, please clear away!’ I shouted at the people on the streets as the grall horse sped past and leapt over them. We reached the kennels quickly but I couldn’t pull the reins because I was clinging to its mane. Fortunately, a brigade member who noticed us caught the horse by running alongside us and catching onto the bridle. Amazing!

He guided us to the stables.

I slid off into a pile of straw.

‘Are you injured?’ the man asked.

‘Oh no!’ I replied. I was fine for the most part, but my arms were aching. I would be very sore tomorrow. The horse on the other hand, looked like he’d had a lot of fun and was prancing merrily.

‘Inspector Fair River, what happened? Why are you here?’ Other brigade members arrived, one of them bearing a glass of water. I took it and rinsed out the straw from my mouth.

‘I have to take Geist to Cranbert Company.’

‘Why? What has happened?’

‘Are the others in trouble?’ they asked one after the other.

Well, they were in trouble but not as they would imagine. I felt it was a good idea to take Geist to meet the female and save her.

‘The whole thing went to pot. The commander was dealing with two black tigers, and the other members are trying to capture the other chase wolfe, but I think she’s looking for Geist. I think if I take Geist there, she would calm down.’

They all looked at each other. They probably knew what it was like to chase a chase wolf. They began to hurriedly prepare.

‘Did the commander ask you to bring Geist?’

‘No, but I think it is the best course of action as an inspector.’

‘But…’

‘She’s calling for him, and she won’t stop until she finds him. Meanwhile, the city knights will soon hear all the commotion and take her away.’

The face of the senior member looked conflicted.

‘Please, I will take responsibility for bringing Geist. It will be fine to run him in the Joanne area anyway. If you put a saddle, bridle and muzzle, it will be no problem.’

I would have preferred not to muzzle Geist but it was the best course of action if there was an accident. And if I, an inspector, and a knight were on Geist, we wouldn’t have issues if we ran into a constable.

He nodded and we got the needed equipment and I went to Geist’s kennel in the breeding den.

‘Hello Geist.’

The beast growled softly.

‘I didn’t come to pet today. Smell me. You want to see her soon, right?’

Geist pressed his nose against my outstretched hand and snorted. He suddenly became restless. (Zuben: With all the running and sweating…?)

He pushed past my hand and sniffed at my pocket. Although it was refined, it definitely bore her scent.

‘Inspector, we’re going.’ The senior brigade member came and unlocked the cage.

‘You’re right about the likely situation with the constabulary.’

‘Everyone agreed that your judgement is credible.’

‘Let’s take Geist to meet his mate.’

They started to outfit Geist for his trip out.

Thank you guys for trusting me.

Geist barked as he was being saddled and muzzled. I stroked him to keep him calm.

‘Be calm, we’re going to meet Lucas and your mate. Be good.’

He gave a sad whine.

‘Yes, we know you hate it, but this is the only way we can take you out.’

He looked at me with his midnight blue eyes a little upset. I know, I don’t like it too.

Still, he accepted his gear. Lucas raised him well.

Geist was led out of the kennel.

‘Inspector, we’ve got you a grall horse…’

Geist growled.

‘Geist, no. You’re with me.’

He howled in protest and slammed his tails down. Once he was out of the kennel, he had come to sniff and snuggle up to me. The brigade member tried to pull him away but he would not budge. Instead, Geist butted my back with his head with a dissatisfied whine. Somehow this reminded me of Lucas.

‘Inspector…’

‘Is this the part where I tell you I can’t ride a chase wolfe?’

‘It would be fine if we use a two-seater saddle but we need to get to Cranbert before sunset.’

I wonder if it would be alright. My muscles were dead from the ride here.

I was lifted side saddle onto Geist’s back as the guy shouted, ‘I’m sorry, commander, I have no intentions!’

It was rather unexpected, and why was he apologising to Lucas.

‘Everyone. Cranbert Company grounds, go!’

Geist started running. It felt different to the grall horse, it felt like flying. I wonder if he was faster than a grall horse. I couldn’t hold the reins so I held the rider’s waist while mentally apologising to the man. His face was red.

Under the dusk, a black chase wolfe bounced around the grass fluttering her long tails. Luckily, the knights hadn’t arrived yet. So many men were lying on the ground.

‘Lucas!’ I called searching for him.

He was still running, being chased by the wolfe. Whenever the wolfe was about to catch him, he’d distract it with a stick which I could see had a fluttering cloth at the end; probably the Geist scented cloth.

I was carried down.

Geist whined next to me. Even though he’d run so far and fast, he didn’t seem tired. I removed the muzzled while brigade member removed the saddle.

I patted his back, ‘Go on.’

He whined questioningly at me. He took a few steps forward, then looked back at me.

‘Go on, she’s been calling. Go.’

With explicit permission, he ran forward and howled. It was so loud we all covered our ears. In the red glow of the sunset, his coat glowed as though he was aflame. The black shadow that had been chasing Lucas stopped and turned at the sound. Its four ears upright in attention.

Geist howled again, and she began to run towards us. Geist also moved forward until they both met. They both howled and circled each other. It sounded like they were singing.

Lucas ran up to me, ‘Mira, you’re alright! I’m glad. Did you bring Geist?’

‘Yes. I’m sorry I didn’t ask your permission first.’

‘No, it was the right decision. I was thinking the same thing. You saved time, and everyone. Thank you.’

Lucas slumped to the ground in exhaustion and pulled me along with him to hold me. His sweaty clothes were cold and made me trembled a little. But he didn’t look injured.

A man who could take on two tigers, he was so amazingly cool!

‘Kane, you worked hard.’ He said to the brigade member that came with me.

‘It’s nothing. I’m glad the inspector was with us. She was able to keep Geist calm.’

‘Did the others go and stall the knights?’

Kane nodded.

‘Thanks to their quick thinking, it’s going well.’

Ahead of us, the black and white wolves ran around each other in a circle, occasionally touching noses and swinging their tails.

‘They look happy.’ Lucas said softly.

They really did. Their growls and whines were soft and gentle. I relaxed and leaned against Lucas watching the wolves do their mating dance.

‘Unn~ hii~’ What was that strange sound.

It was now dark, and there were many dead tired people lying on the grass. I wondered if the sound was of someone crying for help.

I sat up to look around.

‘Miraa~’

I clung to Lucas at the voice. It caused creepy goosebumps.

‘Help me~’

Two bodies twisting oddly on the grass. The slender one shuddered while the thicker one rolled.

No! Stay away!

Did they take off their clothes?!

Ew. Ewww!

The knights rushed in just then, raising a mage light, and their sweaty appearance made them look like slime monsters under the light.

‘Lucas, what happened?’

‘Oh um, I kinda, accidently, force fed Cranbert. It is much worse than I imagined.’

26 At the end of the day…

‘What the hell happened here?’ The captain of knights asked us as he looked down at Chris and Mr Cranbert in confused disgust.

‘Are you responsible here?’

‘I am Lucas Rejude, head of the Rejude Brigade.

‘Rejude Brigade? Why are you here?’

‘Well, we came to visit on the behest of the meatball, I mean the fat man, Mr Cranbert. And several things happened…’

As Lucas explained, the knights were distracted by the oddly wriggling pair.

I shuddered. Lucas rose and put me behind him. Lucas towered over the knight captain.

‘In the end, we found out that Cranbert were keeping the female in heat to distill her pheromones.’

‘That aside, we received reports of a large beast rampaging. Do you have anything to do with this?’

I wondered if I would be interrogated too. As I watched the calm wolfe pair I felt satisfied, and if I lost my job I would have no regrets risking it all to save those two.

‘I can’t say that I am not related. The white one is mine; he’s under application to be a knight beast. The black one is the female that Crabert was illegally tapping for the pheromones.’

‘Chase wolfe pheromones? These guys?’

‘The female went on a rampage in the Cranbert breeding kennel which is why things turned out this way. If you go there,’ Lucas pointed at the open doors, ‘you’ll find the refinery. My fiancée, and collaborator, has a sample in her pocket.’

I bowed from behind Lucas. He looked surprised. I was surprised, too. When did I become a fiancée?

‘And you are…aren’t you a Knight registration inspector. I think I’ve seen you before.’

‘Fair River. I am a knight registration inspector for the Piazza area. The Rejude are under my jurisdiction, so I…helped.’

It turned out that the captain had come to the registration office a few times to see Clyde. No wonder he seemed familiar.

Lucas put his arms around me. In the meantime, the fallen members of the Rejude all got up and gathered behind us, while the knights gathered behind their captain.

‘The beast only broke out of her restraints. There are hurt people, but they got hurt panicking. Cranbert Company were keeping her in an underground breeding kennel while they harvested the pheromones with a special distillation machine.’

I pulled out the bottle from my pocket, ‘This is a sample.’

It looked like a pretty perfume bottom, but its contents were sinister.

The captain opened the bottle and was about to sniff its contents,

‘Don’t do that. If you do, you’ll end up like that…’ I said looking pointedly at the two sweaty wriggling bodies.

Everyone’s gaze followed mine and everyone looked disgusted.

‘Help me ng~ hnn~’

‘No. Don’t rub your hips!’

‘I can’t stop it!’

‘Captain, help me!’

‘Fuck, don’t touch me! Don’t touch me!’

Chris was clinging to a junior knight that was trying to apprehend him, and he was rocking his hips looking ecstatic. Cranbert was…ejaculating.

It was already too obscene.

The knights were not happy to have to handle those two.

For the time being, everyone looked away from the junior knights trying to hold on to Cranbert and Chris. It was dark, they could forget what they saw.

I just thought it was unpleasant. But perhaps men thought differently, because they looked rather delicate and turned away.

‘It’s sad even though it is self-inflicted.’ The captain said handing the bottle back to me.

Why was he giving it back to me? Wasn’t this evidence? (Zuben: There is a lot of evidence in the laboratory)

‘We’ll take them to the station.’

‘What?’

‘It needs to be done. Kirk, assist those guys! When the aphrodisiac wears off, we can listen to their testimony.’

‘Captain, why me?!’

‘You’re good at capturing people. It is right up your street.’

‘But I don’t want to touch them…’

The captain ignored him, ‘Lyle, you and others, go to the laboratory. Ian, call for support so we can collect the evidence.’

‘Can you assist us with the beasts?’ the captain asked Lucas.

‘I was going to assist you anyway.’ Lucas replied.

‘I can’t say that you are not suspects.’

‘I understand that, too. You know where to find us.’

‘Is that alright with you?’ The captain turned to me.

‘Are you asking me?’

I was a little confused by this. It was only my personal interest and nothing connected to my work. As long as the department wasn’t involved.

‘It was my personal interest to cooperate with the Rejude Brigade. And I was a former acquaintance of Mr Danning.’

‘A former acquaintance?’

I gave a nervous laugh. I didn’t want to say he was my ex-boyfriend. I was grateful that he had broken up with me. He was in trouble now.

‘I will be very happy to cooperate with the investigation.’

Lucas looked at me anxiously.

‘Mira.’

‘It’s fine as long as the female and Geist are not being separated.’

I gave him my business smile.

‘The wolves are in forced heat. If they are separated, we cannot guarantee their wellbeing or the safety of their caretakers. In addition, they would be kept near dragons in the guard kennels which would not be conducive for the dragons or the wolves.’

‘But the female is evidence.’

‘In my capacity as an inspector, it would be best for the female to be kept with the Rejude Brigade. Their facilities already have accommodations for chase wolves, so another would not be a burden.’

If he still tried to separate the two, it was not my fault if the knights got hurt.

‘There are also two black tigers in there that went on rampage. If they can’t be kept in the guard kennels, we can look after them at our kennels.’

The knight paled as soon as he heard about the tigers, ‘Tell us that earlier!’ he said before running to the building. Tigers were dangerous, I wondered if the knights who had gone in earlier were only.

Lucas grinned at his back as he shouted, ‘They’re in their cages but are grumpy so be careful!’

He turned to me and shrugged.

I realised he was really good at handling beasts, more than most people. I suppose that was needed to become the commander of a brigade. That must be why the other guys say just him was enough in some circumstances.

‘Well, Mira?’

‘What is it?’

Lucas smiled at me. It wasn’t my fault the knight knew who I was. But I didn’t think there was a problem. Everything went almost as planned.

‘I will be present at your interrogation. I will not let you be alone.’

‘Don’t worry. I am prepared for any consequence.’

‘That’s why I’m worried, I knew you would prioritise work over yourself.’

I was the one who convinced Lucas to get involved, and I didn’t want him to shoulder the blame alone. But I didn’t want to argue about this now. (Zuben: The man could have chosen not to get involved)

‘What is this about me being your fiancé? Are you sick again?’

‘Mira…’

‘Oh was it a lie to protect me?’

‘No, it wasn’t a lie. If you consent, I always want to be by your side.’ Lucas said seriously. His blue eyes stared into mine. The guys were around us, watching us with smiles on their faces. A few seemed to have tears in their eyes. What a nice atmosphere. (Zuben: God, she must have 360 eyes to see what everyone around them was doing.)

‘Ah~ so tight uh~’

‘Captain, I don’t like this.’

‘It is nothing. You’re nothingness. Be nothingness.’

‘Oh~ oh~ stronger~ tighter~ I’m coming~!’

‘Dammit! Get the carriage here as soon as possible!’

‘Yes!’

‘Ah~ Mira~ help me~ my girlfriend~’

Chris reached out to me with his cuffed hands. His body had been tied up. Everytime the knight pulled at the rope, he made gasps of pleasure, the knight looked sickened. He and Cranbert were rubbing against each other while Cranbert was constantly ejaculating and panting.

‘Shall we take Geist and the female back to the kennel?’

‘Yes, let’s bring the cart round.’

We pretended we didn’t see them and carried on with what needed doing. It was best to get out of the way now and leave the rest to the well qualified knights.
