Maggi.

23 Decisive Battle; Cranbert Company 3.

From where we stood, there was a terrible sound of the cage being battered down.

‘The wolfe is going crazy!’

The building seemed to rock with the impact as well, with the ceiling lamp shuddering with each bang.

It had begun.

The staff ran towards us, calling for Mr Cranbert.

‘Sir, the beast!’

‘Permission to use a sedative.’

‘It’s impossible, we can’t get close!’

‘Sir, Mr Cranbert!’

Wasn’t it just a mess? Despite having anti-rampage weapons, the staff were sitting on their hands.

‘Try to take it down quickly with our strongest sedative!’

Cranbert commanded as he rushed past me back in the direction of the den, but there was such an awful howl from I don’t know what beast it was that made everyone crouch down and cover their ears with their hands.

What kind of place does Cranbert company run? Why were there no contingency plans?

For the time being, I needed to look after myself. I had to get out of the breeding den to the guys outside quickly. I rushed back to the cage area to see what Lucas and co. were doing but as I did so, I saw the box of high quality pheromones. I could use this in an emergency, I packed as many as I could in my pockets and held one bottle in each hand. Actually, where was Chris? He should have been here. I looked around and found a figure walking shakily down another passage. He was escaping, but why was he trembling?

‘Chris? How could you leave your guest and run away?’ I called out to him.

‘Mi-mi-mi Mira I’m sorry!’

‘Whatever, you only think about yourself anyway.’

‘I wasn’t running away, I was trying to find the emergency exit.’

I ran to where he was, the place where he pointed was in a tense situation; Lucas and the beast were in battle.

‘You want to run but can’t.’ I said to him.

Chris gulped from the sarcasm in my tone.

‘This is a safe place until Cranbert gets the sedative.’

‘I don’t think this place is safe either, the other beasts seem to be getting caught up in the rampage.’

‘There are magic circles for that…’

There had been two black Yaja tigers in other cages. Perhaps inspired by the chase wolfe, they were also excited. One of them was climbing up the walls of it’s cage and roaring. It seems the unfamiliar roar that I had heard earlier was from the tigers. Unfortunately, the aforementioned magic circles did not hold up, they quickly dissipated.

‘I need to try and help. Keep safe.’

Eugene had opened the doors which he had indicated to me earlier. As I moved towards the cages, Lucas and Douglas were driving the chase wolfe towards it. He seemed to be wearing gauntlets to parry the chase wolfe’s attacks. Lucas roared back at the beast.

Wow! Lucas was so amazing!

His roars were just as menacing as the chase wolfe and the tigers. It was not exaggeration to say he was rather beast like. He seemed to be fine, so I really should not get in the way. It wouldn’t be good if I did.

I finally understood the meaning of the brigade members’ jokes; it was really cool to see. But this wasn’t the time to enjoy this sight. Still tried to burn the memory of his powerful movements into my memory. Oh, I’m dying~  The clenching and unclenching of his arm muscles are the best!

‘Wait with me, Mira!’

While I was fascinated by Lucas, Chris grabbed me, clinging to my back maybe intending to use me as a shield.

I pulled him off me in anger and pushed him to the floor, ‘Hasn’t this all happened because of your greed? Doing terrible things to an innocent beast!’

I felt more powerful than usual. I may not be anywhere close to Lucas, but Chris was in shock.

‘I can’t forgive that you used your factory technology to milk all you could from that beast.’

Chris looked awkwardly at the bottle of pheromone I was holding. Purifying chase wolfe estrus pheromones was prohibited. He was the lowest of the low.

‘Grrr, you don’t understand.’

‘What don’t I understand?’

‘You were always confident. Made me so frustrated to look at you! You saw me as an unreliable man, didn’t you?’

Oh, that was what it was. I had been fuelling his inferiority complex, but I don’t think that it was justification for cheating and calling me a poorly made sex-doll.

‘That is not an excuse for committing a crime.’

‘Shut up! So annoying. Aren’t you getting full of yourself even though you’re just a clerk?!’ He jumped up with his arms swinging. The cornered rat finally baring its fangs.

‘I think you’re still into me, even though you say you’re with the commander!’

‘Absolutely not! I’m happy we broke up. I like Lucas, he treats me as an equal.’

Chris was furious but he was flailing his fists like a child. I punched him up from under his chin, catching him by surprise. Beasts are weak under their chin, but this was also effective for people. He staggered back and glared at me. But I dealt with beasts daily, I was not afraid of him.

His face was a mask of rage, and he was drooling. He wiped his mouth with the sleeve of his shirt. It was the first time I had seen a handsome guy get so angry he became ugly.

But then I noted his eyes weren’t on me but on my hand. The bottle…oh no! The lid was gone and the bottle was empty.

‘Chris, is that saliva?’ (Zuben: that happened with magic?)

‘What did you make me drink?!’

He tried to use his hands to scrape the liquid out and spit out. The lid must have come up while we were struggling and somehow gotten into his mouth. (Zuben: Somehow, plot convenience but somehow) A whole bottle of high quality estrus…it was too scary to imagine. His dick might burst.

‘Oh dear, I’ll be going! Get out before you attack anyone.’ I laughed as I ran away leaving him behind. If I didn’t escape, Lucas wouldn’t be able to concentrate fully. Let Chris feel what many buyers of the pheromones would have done to other women.

But it was an accident.

Truly!

Lucas

Damn it, where was Mira?

I looked around while guiding the chase wolfe out. Did she escape?

She had gone off distracting premature ejaculator Chris and Cranbert to another room. I suspected it was the refining lab, but it was an unexpected development for her to go alone.

That was why I accelerated the plan and showed the female chase wolfe something special.

She reacted immediately, growling.

Douglas injected a syringe of stimulant while she was distracted. He told the staff it was a nutritional drug. We didn’t want to make her uncomfortable, but it was for her benefit.

What I had showed her was a cloth soaked with Geist’s estrus. There was no doubt she considered him her mate, because when she smelled it, she rose with her tails swinging and she gave a happy snort.

‘She has a good reaction to the scent of our chase wolfe.’ Douglas explained to the technicians.

Even though she was chained, they didn’t assist us. They seemed to be wary of the chase wolfe's temperament during their heat. No one wanted their arm torn off. It was the correct course of action, this chase wolfe hadn’t been raised amongst humans like Geist, so she was very wary.

After waiting for a while, the female began to change. The stimulant had begun to work; she was bristling, baring her fangs and growl menacingly at us. She rose and roared and began to fight against her chains. The technicians ran off in fear, leaving us by ourselves.

We pretended to hold her down while breathing the restraints.

‘Eugene!’

He should have opened that door by now. He appeared, pointed at the half open doors and raised two fingers.

Huh?

The beast’s roar was too loud to hear anything.

Hmm, two?

The doors were two?

I left the beast and ran to the doors and kicked it with all my strength. I continued to kick it until the doors loosened and opened with a dull grumble. Either way, it was being obedient.

‘Guide the female with Douglas, I’ll find Mira…’ I was telling Eugene when I spotted Mira running out of a hidden corridor. There must be a path for the workers there. She looked safe and unharmed.

‘Commander, stop the chase wolfe from running away. Please!’

As I was about to get to her, Cranbert rushed up to me, sweaty with fear. I pushed him back with an exasperated sigh.

‘What are your keepers doing?’

‘They’ve never handled a chase wolfe before…hiii! Hiii! The black tigers!’

I could only think of it as an auspicious cry. The tigers broke out of their cage and were in frenzy. It was now a commotion. Though I specialised in taking down beasts, the situation right now was a little bad.

24 Howling of beasts

I left Chris and headed for a door that looked like an emergency exit. The black tiger was running about chasing the keepers who were running helter skelter with no plan. Lucas seemed to by talking to Cranbert, but he didn’t seem to know what to do as person in charge. He was just shouting at Lucas.

Douglas and Eugene were drawing the female out, her tail disappeared out of the strangely distorted doors. Douglas and Eugene would be alright, the others were out there.

We had to do something about the tigers.

One of the keepers had decided to sit in a corner watching the melee,

‘Why is this happening? Why hasn’t there been a magic circle of protection deployed?’

‘Someone cancelled all of the magic circles!’

‘What? Why isn’t there a failsafe in place? What about the crisis management guide?’ (Zuben: Who’s the inspector for Cranbert?)

Even if Joanne was outside the city walls, what was the person in charge of inspecting doing? To get permits to breed large carnivores, stables have to go through a very strict inspection with many magical and physical failsafes in place. I really wanted to see that fat man’s papers, it was likely that they didn’t have any permits.

I waved at Lucas trying to catch his attention. I didn’t want to shout just in case I caught the attention of the tigers. I continued to wave desperately, but it seemed impossible that I would get his attention.

Lucas wielded a lasso with a familiar hand forcing the forcing one of the tigers back into the cage with a worker who seemed to have found his senses. But he couldn’t do it alone. The other keepers had run out. The tiger was struggling to get out, clawing and headbutting any gap. I measured the distance between the other tiger still having a field day out and Lucas, and I and saw the danger. I shouted for Lucas.

‘Lucas, bite its nose! It’s a big weak point.’

Lucas did not hesitate. He bent over and bit the tiger’s nose.

I think I am falling in love with him more and more.

He was so awesome, unlike these useless keepers who don’t understand the responsibility of keeping beasts. Beasts weren’t just cute!

With a feline yowl, the tiger bounced back and ran to its bed.

‘Lucas, catch!’

I threw the other vial I had in my hand to him. It was a little off, but he caught it.

‘There is a distillation machine in the next area!’

‘This is?’

‘Use it if something happens!’

Lucas grinned. It was only an aphrodisiac, but it could be useful.

‘Mira, escape quickly! I’ll subdue the other tiger.’

There were no more flailing keepers to chase and the tiger was trying to choose between either Lucas or me for chase.

‘Yes!’

There was nothing more for me to do, I ran up the stairs and outside. A few of the keepers followed me, but I didn’t pay them any mind. The female chase wolfe was outside, and there were herbivores out there.

‘Don’t take it out!’

‘But we can’t keep it here!’

‘It’s excited because there’s food! Who the hell put cows and horses near a breeding den?!’

What a catastrophe. The members of the brigade were in no situation to protect me. Now that it was no longer penned in, the chase wolfe was running around and barking. Every time it ran forward, it dragged a brigade member. Everytime it tossed it head, a worker was blown away.

‘Sedatives!’

‘There are too many drugs in its system, if we use a sedative it might die.’

‘Let’s run her until she’s tired and then capture her?’

‘We’ll take turns. Douglas and Eugene rest. Boris and I will carry on.’

‘Understood!’

As I watched them carry out their plan, I wondered if a chase wolfe was as powerful as a dragon; it couldn’t fly, but it was agile, cunning, with destructive claws and deadly fangs.

The chase wolfe barked and howled as it ran around. It wasn’t menacing. It sound like it was calling for other wolves. No, that wasn’t it…this was a cry for its mate. (Zuben: Girl, you said you’ve never met a chase wolfe before. How you know?)

As I watched I noted a familiar cloth caught on her fangs. It was the cloth soaked with Geist’s scent that Lucas has brought with him. She was looking for Geist!

There was nothing I could do staying here, so I might as well go. I raced to the place we had left the horses, and found Lucas’ grall horse. I had to go get Geist because I was certain she would not relent until she found Geist. The proud kind of the forest would not give in.

The area was crowded with Cranbert workers and escaping customers. With all this commotion, it wouldn’t be long until the police are involved. Before that happened, I needed to get Geist here.

Lucas’ horse noticed me and raised its head, perhaps because I smelled like Lucas. I stroked its nose before untying the reins.

‘I need to get to the Rejude Brigade, can you take me?’ I said to the horse. It snorted and stamped its foot gently. It looked like it was fine.

Being a tall horse, climbing onto the saddle was a difficult task unless you were accustomed to it. A few minutes of heaving and ho-ing, I got on to the saddle and breathed. The horse neighed gently, I stroked its nape,

‘I’m fine, thanks.’

I pulled at the reins and guided the horse out from the stable to the road. I couldn’t reach the stirrups because they were for Lucas’ legs, so I had no choice but to guide the horse with my heels against its sides.

It wasn’t that I was short, it was that Lucas just had uselessly long legs!

‘I’m holding on. Let’s get to the brigade at full speed!’

I only knew how fast a grall horse was from documentation. I never could have imaging what it was like at full speed.

The horse understood and speed up, and kept speeding until the streets were a blur.

Air rushed into my mouth as we went. I couldn't pinch the horse’s body with my legs because they weren’t strong enough, I could only entwine the reins around my arm and lean down to hold onto its mane.

The horse jumped over people as we went. I heard someone should I angrily, I could only apologise to the wind.

‘Safety first,’ I said to the horse, ‘We don’t want any accidents!’

After subduing the second tiger, I turned to look back at Cranbert who was clinging to a cage while panting roughly.

‘Hey, responsible person,’ I called to the only worker who had helped me.

‘Y,yes!’ He was also tired.

‘Get the magic circles deployed.’

‘Yes, I’ll do it quickly.’

I wiped the sweat dripping down my face. It was difficult to manage two tigers, but I was able to make it, thanks to Mira. I really didn’t want to bite their noses, but I couldn’t hesitate in such an emergency situation.

They were docile cats after that.

‘Mr Cranbert.’

‘Yes. Commander Rejude, tell me anything.’

He was completely afraid of me after watching me subdue his tigers. There was no need to hide our true purpose, but would he play ball?

‘That chase wolfe’s heat seems to have been induced. Do you have any idea of how that came to be?’

‘Oh…that…yes..’

‘Of course, there is no mistake that you do since you have a refining lab right next to the den.’

‘Yes.’

‘And the person who made the distillation machine was that slimy fellow…Danning?’

‘Commander…’

This man was being stubborn. He was still planning on buying my compliance. I took the vial out of my pocket, and he began to talk,

‘I-it was just a trial. We were planning on refining only during the period of heat; so we wouldn’t burden the beast. Y-your fiancé, Miss Mira, she seemed to be very interested in it. You can continue to use it in the future.'

‘Shup up.’

‘Hiii!’

‘Mira isn’t interested in such a thing. We came here to save the beast you were milking and abusing to satisfy your greed and people’s desires. Do you know what that means, Cranbert?’

I walked up to him and he stepped back until he was backed up against a wall. No one was trying to stop me. It seemed that he was being abandoned by his subordinates.

He was pathetic.

‘In order to get this much, you must have hurt the beast a lot.’

Cranbert was quivering in fear, so much so that his teeth were clattering and his belly giggled.

I laughed at him.

‘I hear your accomplice also had a taste of this.’ I said him as I opened the vial and thrust the opening into Cranbert’s mouth. I clamped over his mouth as he tried to spit it out.

It really wasn’t intentional, I just wanted to poke the contents into his mouth.

‘How is it? It looks like you’re thirsty. It must be delicious.’

I don’t know what would happen if it was drunk. The effects would soon be seen. I left Cranbert trying to vomit the aphrodisiac on the floor, and headed out to there the female was rampaging. Like Geist, she would be inexhaustible, my guys would be having a hard time.

I could hear her sorrowful howls.
