45 Meeting
Wang Yu, Li Rui and Lu Ran left.
Shen Chen, Wang Quan and Li An took their place. Seeing the newcomers, Xiao Yi
sighed at her friend’s good fortune.
She was full of praises especially
for Li An, she encouraged Su Yue not to let go of the tender grass.
Su Yue never said anything, but her
heart was wavering each passing day.
When she first moved to the town,
she had been full of fear and hatred of the men. But as time went by, and she
relaxed, she began to miss them, she missed their consistent visits...and the
sex. Perhaps it was because she was wondering who the babies’ father was, but
she had thought of them a lot in the nine months.
Was it desire that induced other
emotions for a person?
Was what happened really
unforgivable? (Zuben: Yes. It didn’t have to happen.)
Before that night, she had been a
willing participant. According to rules of the Hall, as a server, she wasn’t to
know who the guests were – that’s why there were partitions in the first place.
She gave her body and time, and she was rewarded with pleasure and money.
She had thought it was a good deal.
So why was it that when she found
that they had been her only customers, had she been unable to accept it?
With Xiao Yi’s words, she had come
to the conclusion, and the root of everything was her lack of confidence.
She was not confident that men like
them could fall in love with a woman like her, who did that kind of work and
enjoyed it.
She was not confident of the care
for her.
She believed everything they did
for her was hypocritical and with an intent to harm her.
But when she thought about it, why
would they want to harm her? What would they gain? What did she posess that was
worth their plotting?
Beauty? Her appearance was at most
delicate. Even without the bonus of the status, their looks enough would
attract better looking women.
Wealth? The money she had earned
was from them. Her hourly wages got raised from three to four digits. (Zuben:
Should have been five)
Was it that she was scared that
they would be like Jiang Huai, and cheat by marriage to deal with family
members? But none of them were gay.
So what did they want from her…
Was it her body...and her heart?
Su Yue couldn’t allow her self to
think...to dream...to hope. So she stopped.
A couple of weeks later, Su Yue
finished her confinement.
And all the men arrived in the
town.
But no one made the move to meet Su
Yue. They only watched her and the babies in the distance, not daring to
disturb her peaceful life.
In the end, Wang Yu took Li An and
went to see Xiao Yi.
It turns out that Xiao Yi had
already been converted to the enemy camp in the first few days of their visit,
and that was why she comforted Su Yue helping her move her heart in the
direction of the men.
Wang Yu had been open with their
feeling for Su Yue and their plans to pursue her, with promises that they would
never bully her.
‘Fine, I’ll get her to come to the
café tomorrow.’ She told Wang Yu and Li An.
They were all holding back, scared.
She was happy to be the middle-man and get them together.
The next day after feeding the
babies, Xiao Yi got Su Yue to come to the café. When she got to the café, Su
Yue figured Xiao Yi’s plan, but she went along with it.
Xiao Yi led her to a private room,
and left, claiming she needed to go to the bathroom. (Zuben: Do even cheapy
places have “private rooms” in Asia?)
A few minutes after she left, Wang
Yu entered the room.
Su Yue had imagined all the ways
that she would meet Wang Yu, and she had imagined all sorts of plans if it
happened.
But now, in the moment, she was
stunned and didn’t know what to say.
Wang Yu couldn’t stop looking at Su
Yue, but she looked away from him. He gave a wry smile, and sat opposite her.
They were both silent for a time.
Just when Su Yue was at a loss,
Wang Yu sighed,
‘Xiao-yue,’
Su Yue was startled.
‘I want to apologise for what
happened.’ he said heavily.
Su Yue was shaken, but she didn’t
respond.
‘And, thank you, for not giving up
our children because we wronged you.’
‘The babies are so cute, thank you
for giving birth to them.’
Su Yue finally looked at him, ‘They
are also my children, you don’t have to say this.’
‘What happened before-’
‘Is past.’ She interrupted him,
‘Thank you for your generosity during this time.’
Wang Yu gave a stiff smile.
‘You’re welcome, but it is what I
should do. In the future-’
‘You should go back to A city.’
Seeing his face stiffen, she
realised she was sounding cold.
‘What I mean is, you’re the CEO of
your company, you cannot waste your time here,’
Her intention was to keep him from
delaying his work because of her and the children, not to drive him away, ‘but
do come and visit us when you’re free.’
Her face grew heated when he
realised what she had said and looked ecstatic.
‘Xiao Yue, do you mean that?’ he
asked excitedly, standing up from his seat. Su Yue immediately became on guard,
making Wang Yu sit down, ‘Are you willing to accept me?’
‘I hadn’t really thought about it.’
she replied quietly.
Although Xiao Yi’s words touched
her, it was still a big challenge to accept Wang Yu or the other men.
‘Not to worry, you can think about
it slowly. Just...don’t run away from me anymore. Please.’ his tone was
pleading.
Su Yue felt a little guilty.
‘Same goes for the others,’
‘We had a discussion before we came
here. What happened will never happen again. We will never force you ever
again.
‘We will pursue you fairly, without
pressure, and it is up to you to decide which one of us you want?’
Su Yue’s eye widened, ‘What?’
Letting her choose? Even more than
one?
Could it be like this? Were they so
generous?
‘Yes, we’ve had time to think, and
we are sure that we are all in love with you. And you’re the only one we will
love in the future.’
‘Although, no one really wants to
share the woman they love with another man, but if that is your choice, we will
accept it.’
‘Also,’ he continued, ‘we will
consider any child you give birth to ours – it doesn’t matter who the
biological father is.’
‘You can chose whomever to marry,
and have a certificate but we hope you will give us each a chance to have a
ceremony with you.’ (Zuben: What you’re doing is unconventional, why do you
need to frame it in the bounds of convention?)
‘We all want to be your groom.’
Su Yue was so shocked by the
development she didn’t know what to say. One was willing to marry her to have a
certificate but those who didn’t wanted to do it anyway?
Was this a scam? Was there a hidden
camera she couldn’t see?
Wang Yu waited for Su Yue to say
something, watching every expression on her face. But there was no response
forthcoming.
‘Xiao Yue, I beg you, on behalf of
everyone, I hope you can give us a chance.’
‘Let us make it up to you, take
care of you, and love you.’
Su Yue’s heart caved.
She looked down, ‘Alright.’ she
said with a soft nod.
Wang Yu was overjoyed.
‘Xiao Yu, you accept?’
Su Yue’s face turned red, but she
didn’t reply outright.
‘Xiao Yue believe me, we will be
good husbands to you, and good fathers to the babies. We will take care of you
and the children in the future.’ Wang Yu knelt before her as he pulled out a
black velvet box from his pocket. (Zuben: What happened to the “wait a year”
plan)
He opened it to reveal an exquisite
diamond ring that sparkled brightly.
‘I had prepared this but never got
the chance to give it to you.’
Su Yue’s gaze was riveted to the
brightly shining diamonds; it would be a lie if she said she didn’t like it.
(Zuben: What happened to making them suffer first?)
‘This must have been very
expensive.’ she said quietly.
The ring Jiang Huan gave her had
been 10,000yuan.
Wang Yu was amused, ‘Not really,
just 5.2 million; I got it for the lucky number.’
Su Yue’s eyes widened, 5.2
million?! She was shocked.
‘A-and you’re giving it to me?’
If she sold this, wouldn’t it be
worth more than 5 million?
With this, she didn’t really doubt
his feelings for her anymore. If Wang Yu had ulterior motives, he wouldn’t be
willing to sink five million.
‘Yes.’ Wang Yu smiled. He thought
her reaction was particularly cute.
She was insecure, and money was the
most practical thing that would give her a sense of security.
She held out her hand.
Wang Yu was delighted, and quickly
took the ring out to put it on Su Yue’s finger.
Su Yue looked at the ring on her
finger for a long time. Five million yuan on her hand. It was enough to buy
three houses back in A City!
‘If you don’t want to return to A
City, I can by you a mansion here. That way, we can come and see you at
anytime. Is that alright with you?’
Su Yue looked at him in surprise.
‘The house would be in your name.
We’ll get you a driver and a housekeeper to look after you and the children.’
Su Yue was getting overwhelmed, it
was too much.
‘No, it wouldn’t be cost effective
to by a house here. I-we may not stay here for long.’
After living in this place, she
found that she missed A City, and preferred it there. She had become accustomed
to climate and the life there. It had become her second home town. And she had
only come to F City to escape from them, but now…
Hearing Wang Yu, she was tempted,
and she didn’t want him to waste money.
‘Really? Then are you coming back
to A City! I have three houses, the largest one is in the North District – I
will arrange for it to be transferred to you.’
Damn, she realised she had
compromised and agreed too quickly. She was annoyed with herself for caving to
easily.
But the expression on his face made
that feeling dissipate. He was being so kind, why was she still being
hypocritical?
‘It won’t be for a few months. I
have to wait till the babies are a bit older, and deal with the business with
Xiao Yi.’
And use this time for observing
them.
‘Okay, when I return to A City, I
will prepare for your return.’
Su Yue didn’t know how to respond.
At that moment, there was a knock, and Li An popped his head in,
‘Uncle, Yueyue-jie…’
‘Come in,’
Li An entered, carrying Xiaowan,
his eyes were glued to Su Yue as soon as he entered. Su Yue got up and went to
collect the baby,
‘Xiaoyi-jie said Xiaowan might be
hungry.’
Although he knew Xiaowan was his,
seeing her was still shocking; she really looked like him. Especially her nose,
cheeks and mouth, and her dimples.
Her eyes and brow were Yueyue-jie.
The thought that he had a baby with Su Yue made his heart melt.
Su Yue went to sit and was about to
lift her clothes when she realised there were two men in the room.
She looked up at Wang Yu and Li An
awkwardly, and they turned around.
Su Yue flushed, before lifting her
blouse, and unhooking her nursing bra to feed the baby. Xiaowan feed greedily.
Though they couldn’t see, Wang Yu
and Li An’s minds were askew imagining Su Yue feeding the baby. It took a lot
of effort to resist turning around.
When Xiaowan ate her fill, she fell
asleep, and Su Yue put her clothes back together.
She realised neither of the men
looked back, she was filled with a mixture of relief and disappointment.
Perhaps they didn’t try to peek because they were no longer attracted to her
post-partum body.
Suppressing the disappointment, she
reminded herself not to think too much.
46 Grandma disapproves.
‘I’ve finished.’
Wang Yu and Li An turned back, and
Li An stepped forward to take Xiaowan from her.
‘Why is Xiaowan here? Where is
Xiaole?’
Wang Yu perked up hearing Xiao Le’s
name.
‘Grandma and the nurse brought them
since they were crying.’
‘I better go and see that he’s
okay.’
Wang Yu eagerly followed. He had
seen the photos, and longed to hold his son.
Su Yue had no objection, and they
went to the main café where grandma and the nurse were sitting on a sofa with
the pram and the baby in her arms.
Su Yue picked up Xiao Le and he
looked happy, making her relieved. Seeing that he was alright, she handed the
baby to Wang Yu.
Wang Yu accepted the baby, stiffly
and nervously.
Staring at features similar to his
own, his heart was beating fast.
Su Yue watched him, amused by his
reaction.
Soon the other men entered the
café. Things were a little awkward at first, but soon they were fighting to
hold the babies.
Xiao Wan was the most popular one;
they took turns hugging her and teasing her. Everyone, including, Wang Yu
thought Xiao Wan was cuter than Xiao Le, because she looked like Su Yue.
Grandma Su was frowned and looked
unhappy, but seeing them care about the babies, she relaxed for now.
After that day, the men began to
appear next to Su Yue in twos. Taking her and the babies out to shopping,
looking after them at home, being overly attentive.
Grandma Su was repulsed by them,
and didn’t like that they were all around Su Yue. A month passed and she
finally plucked the courage to talk to Su Yue about it. Though they obviously
cared for Su Yue, it would not look good to outsiders.
‘Su Yue, we need to talk about
those men.’
‘What about them, grandma?’ She
replied evasively.
‘ I don’t like that they’re coming
her all the time, don’t they have their jobs and school?’
‘As far as I am aware, they seem to
be keeping on top of everything.’
‘It just doesn’t look right.’
‘Grandma…’ Su Yue looked down,
twiddling her fingers, ‘what would you say if I told you…’
‘If you told me what?’
‘That they all want to marry me.’
‘What? What did you say?’ All six
of them?! Marry her granddaughter, ‘Wait, help me understand; is it that you
pick one of them or you’re marrying all of them?’
‘All...of them.’ Su Yue replied
nervously, ‘And I am considering it.’
‘No I don’t agree.’ What is this
madness? How could a woman marry six men?! If people found out, what would they
say? They would talk badly of her family, her great grandchildren.
‘But grandma…’
‘No, pick one amongst Wang Yu, Lu
Ran or Li An.’
To her Wang Yu was the most
reliable of the six, and he was one of the children’s father. Su Yue would be
best with him.
Su Yue was silent, she understood
her grandma’s worries but this past few weeks, she realised that she was in
love with all six men, and would regret giving any of them up. She didn’t want
to hurt any of them.
Grandma Su was angry with Su Yu
seeing her reluctance,
‘Do you realise marriage is not
just a matter of two people?’ she asked harshly, ‘Wang Yu is the most likely
man to convince his family to accept you. No of the others, except maybe Lu
Ran, would be able to do the same.’
‘What’s more, if any of the
families found out that you were with all six of them; have you thought of the
consequences?’
Su Yue was shocked; she hadn’t
thought about it at all.
‘I-I didn’t think I would have
contact with their families.’ As soon as she spoke, she realise how naïve she
was being. It was impossible not to have contact with their family members.
Such a situation would not work out in the long term.
‘I’ll discuss it with them, and
then we can come to a decision.’
Seeing that Su Yue was not going to
give up, Grandma Su sighed and left Su Yue’s room.
Su Yue’s heart was heavy with
worry, so she called Wang Yu and told him what her grandma had said,
‘She’s right. No good family is
going to approve of their son being one of six husbands to some woman from
nowhere.’
‘It will be fine,’ he told her, ‘My
parents passed away in an accident when I was young. I have a sister I am not
close to. With me, you don’t have to worry about in-laws.’
‘As for the others, I’m sure they
have a way to handle their family.’ (Zuben: Yes, the one family with two sons
marrying the same girl – that would go down a treat!)
‘The simplest way is for you to
marry me officially, as Mrs Wang, no one will dare say or do anything even if
they found out.’ (Zuben: Clever)
Su Yue was moved, but she did feel
it was all a bit immoral. However, Wang Yu soothed her fears and worries.
They talked a bit longer, Wang Yu
coaxed her more before hanging up.
Once he did, he texted the others
on the steam-bun alliance group chat,
[Xiao Yue is worried about our
families’ reaction of her affairs with us. Everyone has to handle their own
family, if you can’t sort it out; bow out gracefully. We can’t let Xiao Yue
suffer one bit of grievance from anyone.]
A chorus of [Yes!] appeared making
Wang Yu smile.
Very good, as long as everyone
worked together, they could get Xiao Yue back to A City. So he could propose to
her.
Over the next few days, the men
made arrangements to persuade their families, by fair means or foul, and at the
end settled their matters.
When they reported their success,
Wang Yu went to see Su Yue.
