39 Taken: 

Huo Mu cleaned her up. As he did, he noticed her vagina was inflamed. He felt very apologetic,

He stared at her; he couldn’t see any changes. He asked in horror, ‘What has changed?’

‘Hm, I heard that after a girl’s first time it feels strange to walk. Am I walking strangely?’ She did feel a little strange as she walked, like her legs has been forced open and couldn’t close. Guanguan lay in the bed in Huo Mu’s lounge because she wanted to watch him work. He looked so handsome when he was working. Watching him, she fell asleep. She got startled awake at the sounds of conversation.

It sounded like Huo Mu and his secretary.

‘Mr Huo, I have worked with you for so many years – since the inception. In just two years, we have grown rapidly, and I don’t think you would have been able to do this without me. So why are you transferring me to public relations?’ Su Yuan, his secretary, asked.

‘This is a promotion and a raise to acknowledge your contribution to the company.’ Huo Mu explained patiently.

But Su Yuan sneered, ‘That may be what you say, but I believe that this is because of your girlfriend. She doesn’t like that I am your secretary, so you’re transferring me. I have worked with you for two years, but you’re listening to a woman you’ve known for only a few months? She has only met me twice, and she has decided she didn’t like me; do you think I can accept this?’

Huo Mu looked at her solemnly as he spoke, ‘I have known her since high school, she’s been my girlfriend since our senior year. Is this reason enough for you?’

Su Yuan had been about to retort, but she chose to keep silent. She could only give up. She had assumed that he had only known the woman for a few weeks and it was just a fling.

She took a deep breath and tried a different tack, ‘If that is the reason, I have nothing to say. After all, you’re the boss and I am the subordinate. I have no right to question your arrangement. In the meantime, I will find you a new secretary; a man, perhaps? I have taken care of you for such a long time, I’m sure I can find someone who suits you.’

‘And once I’ve transferred, you need to look after yourself; you can forget to eat, because of your delicate stomach. Remember not to work late, and sleep early.’

Guanguan nearly burst out of the room in anger. She wanted to hit the woman with the pillow; what kind of crazy person is this? How dare she say this to her boyfriend? Is this how a secretary behaves?  It’s obvious she had taken him as a boyfriend in her head.

She wanted to grab the green tea bitch and shake her. 

 

40 No Longer Necessary: 

Guanguan couldn’t sit still, she came out of the room wearing the outfit the secretary had procured for her,

‘My love, I have woken up. I’m so hungry, shall we go to dinner?’

She glanced in disdain at Su Yuan, and went round to Huo Mu to wrap her arms around him.

Huo Mu nodded, and rose from his chair. He went to get his coat and her windbreaker. As he put on the jacket for her, he spoke to Su Yuan,

‘There is no need to for you to find me another secretary, Su Yuan. I have already found a suitable candidate. There is no need for you to worry. I have bothered you with lots of things these past few years. I’ll see you tomorrow.’

He nodded, and left the office with Guanguan.

Su Yuan was stunned silent. She watched them go, clinging to each other, and stamped her foot in anger. (Zuben: I’m beginning to think that Asian women in novels behave like petulant children when they don’t get their way, or is this because of childhood repression?)

She was so jealous. She was unwilling to let go; she had liked him so for long, how could she give him to a nobody so easily. How could he abandon her now that his business was taking off?

Guanguan happily held his hand as they left the office building. She didn’t want to go out, she wanted to eat his cooking. So, they went to the supermarket. The last time they were there together, they had been at odds. But today, Guanguan was sticking to him like glue. When he picked healthy food, she picked snacks. He didn’t allow her to buy too many fizzy drinks.

When they got to the fruit section, she picked a pack of strawberries and a pack of grapes and asked him,

‘Which would you like, Huo Mu? I want to make juice for you. I promise that you will love it.’ She asked flirtatiously.

Huo Mu knew her well, he moment she talked about making juice he knew what she had planned. He picked both, and a bunch of bananas, ‘I like bananas too.’

Guanguan smiled, ‘I like your big banana better. But I will make the bananas for you, and make sure none is left.’

Huo Mu growled and pinched her waist.

They proceeded to the check-out counter, and Huo Mu bought two boxes of condoms.

When they got home, Guanguan lay on the sofa looking at Weibo and chatting with her friends while Huo Mu cooked dinner. Mousse was now particularly attached to Huo Mu, she sat at his legs while he cooked. She didn’t know what kind of white-eyed cat her had. The cat that had pestered her once upon a time, had ran off with Huo Mu.

She chatted with her sister in law, Lu Rao, who had just sent a picture of her little baby to her circle of friends. Lu Rao had given birth to her boy a year before, he hadn’t been planned. After this, her brother went to get a vasectomy.

She thought her nephew was very cute. She rushed up to Huo Mu to show him the picture.

‘Look at my nephew, isn’t he so cute? He inherited our family’s beautiful genes.’

Huo Mu looked at the picture, ‘He’s very cute.’ He said.

Guanguan was relieved when he said that, she pressed more, ‘How about we have one?’

Huo Mu was shocked. Guanguan stared at him in expectation.

He put down the soup spoon and turned to her.

‘At this moment, I think it would be irresponsible of me to marry you and have children. I don’t want to do so until I am sure I can give you and our baby happiness.’

Guanguan’s bright eyes darkened in disappointment, ‘I suppose you’re right. I’m only twenty-three, it isn’t good to have children too early. I will wait until after you make a success of the company. You will marry me and have babies.’

Huo Mu pulled her into a hug, ‘Be assured, you’re the only woman I will marry in my life. But I want to make sure you have a good life before I make you wear a wedding dress.’

Guanguan smiled sweetly and kissed him. She immediately went back to the living room.

Huo Mu had refused Guanguan’s clumsy overtures, but the girl didn’t seem to understand, she never seemed to give up. Even when she was driven away by Shu Lin, she still hovered around like a fly. Even when he was blunt, and insulting, she wouldn’t take it to heart and remain.

She only thought that she liked him so she pursued him - as long as there was perseverance, the iron rod would eventually be ground to a needle. Although the distance between their hearts felt like it was the Himalayas, she still wanted to draw their hearts closer. After all, he didn’t have a girlfriend, so she had a chance to succeed.

Shu Lin, on her part, had succeeded in sitting with Huo Mu. She had wanted to pursue him, but was afraid of his refusal. So, she planned to cultivate feelings with him, and make him chase her. If he did, they could definitely be together.

But Guanguan always came by to disrupt her plans.

As soon as class was over, Guanguan would pull her seat over to sit in front of Huo Mu and read her comics.
