Crisis:
This was the biggest crisis Jiang
Haocheng had ever experienced in his life.
This must be Zhao Tianlin’s plot; to
drown him!
Watching the water rise up to his
neck, Haocheng cursed in his heart. How could the water be rising? Were there
tidal effects in a cave?
Come on, he’ll drown if he didn’t do
something.
He tried to struggle, but the manacles
were too firmly situated and his wrists were so slender and fragile. Let him
live and die? He didn’t want it!
‘Hello! Is anyone out there?! Help!
I’m about to drown! Help! Help!’
The rising water entered his
mouth, he began to cough, ‘Help! Somebody help!’
He rose on his tip toes as the water
rose more. Then he saw something that made his eyes widen—
In the low light, he saw a pair of
glowing red eyes staring at him strangely, his heart went cold.
‘Hssss…’ a big black snake approached
from the top of the cave (Zuben: I thought the light was low, how do you know its
colour?). Its triangular head lifted as it moved closer, its forked tongue
darting out as it hissed, and its glowing red eyes eyeing him like delicious
food. (Zuben: Maybe it wants to marry you?)
Haocheng could not decided whether he
preferred to drown or eaten by a snake. (Zuben: Drown)
He could only stare furiously as the
snake approached. The cold water had risen up to his nose, he held his breath
as he stared at the approaching serpent, and a cold sweat dripped from his
forehead.
The serpent had now come to the top of
his head, and the rest of its body curled round from behind it. The hissing
grew louder as it grew nearer. Jiang Haocheng saw the snake open its maw, he
shut his eyes, he had only one thought in his head: Zhao Tianlin, Laozi hates you!
Huh? Why was there no pain?
He tentatively opened his eyes to see
the snake still above his head with its mouth open, but a red sleeve had it by
the throat (Zuben: (ʘᗩʘ’)) . He was so startled, opened his mouth to shout but
inadvertently gulped water. Drinking several mouthfuls at one, he lost his air
and could not breathe.
‘Haocheng!’ Danning shouted, she
tossed the snake aside and rushed quickly to him. She broke the manacles and
carried him out of the cave.
Laying him on the dry land outside,
she patted his face trying to wake him.
‘Haocheng! Haocheng! Wake up!’ She
cried in alarm. His face was deathly pale and his body was cold, she could not
wake him, no matter how many times she called.
Her hands trembled and her green eyes
was filled with panic, ‘Jiang Haocheng! You can’t die. Wake up! Please, wake
up!’
She had searched the hills, poking
into caves one after the other, but she hadn’t found him. She became frantic
with fear that something might happen to him. As she searched, she heard a
shout for help, she quickly followed the sound but it died away. She looked up
and down, but there were no caves. She was sure she had heard the voice.
Looking around, she was about to leave, when she spied the crevice. She poked
through the underbrush, and found an entrance that had space enough for two. Looking
in, she saw the snake opening its mouth wide above his head and he was also
drowning! Her heart was caught in her chest. She rushed into rescue him, but
now he wasn’t moving. He didn’t answer when she called.
Danning bit her lip. She didn’t know
what to do, ‘Haocheng…’she cried, ‘what shall I do…?’ she was at a loss.
Staring at his pale face, it suddenly occurred to her that he swallowed a lot
of water. With a firm resolve, she raised her fist and hit him hard on his
chest.
‘Urgh!’ Haocheng exclaimed followed by
a coughing fit, coughing up the water from his lungs. He stared at her
incredulously. He had just been beaten up by Zhao Tianlin, now she was hitting
him were it hurt? Domestic violence!
‘Haocheng! You’re awake!’ she cried in
surprise and delight. Her green eyes filled with tears.
He panicked seeing the tears in her
eyes, ‘Xiaojiu, don’t cry…’
Before he could say more, she hugged
him,
‘You scared me to death,’ she
whispered, her body trembling in his arms.
He grunted in pain.
She quickly released him, ‘Are you
hurt? Where does it hurt?’
He didn’t want her to worry, so he
smiled and said, ‘Nowhere…’
But as soon as he relaxed, exhaustion
and pain overtook him, and his vision went dark as he fell limply into her
arms.
Jiang Haocheng was awakened by hunger.
He opened his eyes, his empty stomach
making him feel uncomfortable; oh he was so hungry! And he hurt all over.
Staring at the ceiling, he felt a little overwhelmed realising he was alive. There was as softness near him, he turned to look;
Danning was curled up beside him, sleeping. Her head was resting on his
shoulder, she looked like a kitten nestled around him.
He blinked; it was the first time he
had ever seen Xiaojiu asleep.
Her long lashes fell against her
cheeks, her breathing was soft, and her face was calm. Instead of her usual
cold and forbidding appearance, she looked like an obedient kitten. His eyes
softened and he stroked her lashes.
Her eyes opened, and her green eyes
looked quietly at him.
He smiled and stroked her face, ‘How
long have I been asleep?’ he asked, his voice was hoarse.
‘A day.’ She replied, rubbing her
cheek against his hand. She frowned, ‘I don’t like you being injured.’
He had a lot of bruises on his body.
She had been unhappy when she saw his wounds. He should be white and pure,
without blemish.
‘They’re just minor injuries. It’ll be
fine in a few days.’ He said before kissing her on her forehead, trying to coax
her worry away. He blinked piteously at her, ‘I’m hungry.’
‘I’ll go get you some food.’ She got
out of bed, walked a few steps and turned back to him.
‘I will wait for you in bed,
obediently.’ He said right away, with a smile.
After looking at him for a long time,
she left the room.
It looked like his disappearance had
frightened her deeply, she was not at ease leaving him alone.
Haocheng tried to sit up in bed, but
found himself in pain. His face twisted from the discomfort.
‘Oh…shit!’ Tianlin had not been
playing. Although, he had been asking for it. Knowing a lovelorn person could
not stand to hear the truth, he had deliberately goaded him. Massaging his
chest, he heard the door open.
‘How fast…’ he began to say until he
saw his visitor, ‘What? Would you like to kidnap me again?’
Zhao Tianlin approached with a sneer,
‘It looks like your injuries are not serious if you still have the strength to
talk. Pity, you didn’t drown.’
He had heard about the cave getting
flooded. It was an accident, he hadn’t known that the water in the cave would
rise, but he wasn’t about to tell him that. Haocheng’s death would have been
his good luck. (Zuben: Still would not have gotten the girl, go sit down)
‘Oh? Haven’t you heard of the calamity
of a thousand years [1]? This beautiful Laozi is destined to live a long time.’
He paused and smiled at Zhao Tianlin, ‘I will grow old with Xiaojiu.’
And you will die of jealousy!
But Tianlin did not express any anger.
Haocheng’s eyebrows raised in surprise, ‘What? Did you finally die?’
‘I did not lose to you,’ Tianlin said
proudly, ‘I just don’t want A Jiu to be sad.’
So he was now willing to let go.
‘That’s what losers say.’ He
understood.
This man! Tianlin’s eyes narrowed and
his fist clenched.
‘Hey, gentlemen don’t hit the sick!’
Haocheng said hurriedly.
Tianlin smiled, ‘I am not a
gentleman.’
‘Didn’t say you were.’ Haocheng
replied, unafraid, ‘Even if you kill me, you won’t get Xiaojiu.’
La la la—
Tianlin gritted his teeth, trying not
to allow Haocheng’s barbs to anger him, ‘How did A Jiu fall for someone like
you?’
Haocheng shrugged and laughed, ‘It’s
because I stalked her and stuck to her like sticky candy.’
‘You!’ This scoundrel. Zhao Tianlin
gave a cold harrumph and turned to leave, before he stepped out of the door, he
stopped and made himself say, ‘I will not apologise.’
Haocheng raised his brows, ‘That’s
alright. The Laozi is mature and magnanimous; I forgive you.’
‘Ha!’ Tianlin laughed; in truth, he
had not hated Haocheng’s personality, but they could never be friends.
Just as he left, Danning returned with
the meal. She did not speak to him, and he walked past her, saying as he did,
‘The groom has changed. I wish you happiness.’
She looked away and did not respond.
‘Xiaojiu.’ He called as he saw her
enter, he looked like a puppy with its ears up and tail wagging at the sight of
her.
She came to the bed and placed the
tray on his legs.
‘Feed me,’ he said coquettishly.
She said by him on the bed, and
scooped a spoonful of rice porridge, blew on it to cool it before carefully
bringing it to his lips. Haocheng happily ate, and he smiled at her. He knew
Tianlin had spoken to her, but he did not ask what he had said. Xiaojiu’s heart
was his, and that was enough. He should be tolerant of the lovelorn person.
After swallowing another mouthful of
porridfe, he kissed Xiaojiu on the cheek, leaving traces of food which he began
to lick off. He licked all the way to her mouth and they began to kiss. Hmm,
she was so sweet.
There was a cough.
Who?
Haocheng opened his eyes , irritated
by the interruption, ‘Which per- Eh!’ At the door, were his future father and
mother in law. Luckily, he shut up in time, or else would he be skinned alive
by father in law seeing him eating his daughter’s tofu.
Shen Wanning blushed as she entered
the room.
‘Uncle, Aunt.’ Haocheng greeted with a
smile. He was not afraid, Xiaojiu was here.
Master Ji nodded, but he did not look
happy. No father would be happy seeing his daughter fool around.
Shen Wanning watching Haocheng; he
really was too handsome, but he wasn’t annoying and his laughter was pleasant.
She looked at her daughter, feeding
Haocheng and not minding their presence.
Haocheng did not stand on ceremony and
continued to eat.
They have never seen their daughter be
caring like this. They looked at each other, and Wanning sighed in her heart.
‘A Jiu, after the Wulin Assembly, we
will do the wedding.’ They have started kissing, they can’t not get married.
Danning did not speak but carried on
silently.
Haocheng stared at the elders in
surprise, a little disbelieving, ‘Huh? So that means…?’
‘That means if you dare eat my
daughter’s tofu before the wedding…!’ Ji Gongyi said sternly and coldly. If he
hadn’t been with his daughter, he would not have let him get away with it.
Haocheng blinked, ‘So, I can marry
Xiaojiu?’
Ji Gongyi scoffed while Shen Wanniang
nodded.
Oh! Oh! Oh!
‘Xiaojiu, we can get married!’ He
cheered and hugged her disregarding his injuries.
Danning let him hold her, and buried
her face in his chest. She remained quiet, but there was a quiet smile on her
face. (Zuben: Aww cute)
Epilogue:
Finally, he married his wife!
Looking at his bride sitting the bed,
Haocheng’s mood was so beautiful that he was practically bubbling. He quickly
took off her veil. (Zuben: This should be the other way round)
Her green eyes stared directly at him.
Her face had been lightly made up. Under the candlelight, she looked beautiful
and moving; making him hungry for her.
He turned around and picked up the
glasses of wine, downing both glasses, he leaned down and kissed her feeding
her the wine in his mouth. The liquid overfilled their mouths and dripped from
between their lips. Haocheng licked the trail of wine on her chin, the rouge on
her lips had stained his lips red.
‘Wife, you’re beautiful today.’ He
said as he pushed her into bed and began to take her wedding clothes off her
while kissing her.
Danning’s eyes twinkled and her ears
were small and pink. (Zuben: Is there any point where her ears would grow?)
‘How is it the more I look at you the
more I love you?’ Falling in love at first sight was only a moment, but his
love for her grew day by day. His love for her where like piles of little
boxes, that grew to big boxes and filled his heart (Zuben: Like Tetris.
Actually that might not be a good analogy…)
‘How about you; do you like me or
not?’ He asked kissing her little red mouth again; he didn’t expect her to
answer. He knew she loved him.
‘Yes,’ she replied softly.
What? Haocheng blinked in surprise, he
thought he had misheard, ‘Xiaojiu, what did you just say?’ His voice trembled
with excitement, his eyes twinkled in anticipation, and his doggy tail waggled.
Danning did not say anything for a
while, then she opened her mouth, ‘Love you.’ A blush stole over her face.
Oh, she was so cute! His heart was in
full bloom, he could no longer control it. He rushed her like a wolf and ate
his beloved rabbit. (Zuben: Rabbit. Kitten. Same-same)
His shy little rabbit let him eat her.
Perhaps, just like him, at the first sight, she had fallen quietly in love.
