When Rabbit Met Wolf 57 - 58
Dali, China [Lukas Carter] |
57 Reunited.
Lang Lang burst into the emergency department holding a drenched and unconscious Tutu. His grave expression scared the young doctor who had just come back from his break. He quickly directed them to an open bed, but Lang Lang refused holding tightly onto Xiao Tu. (Zuben: Not once, in my time reading these Chinese novels, have I understood the reckless fainting. The character is supposed to be boisterous how is she fainting because she sprained her ankle and got caught in rain?)
The doctor was also a tough boss, so he stood on tip toe and glared back at Lang Lang. Fortunately, Mr Li was on hand to smooth things over,
‘Haha, Doctor, could you please forgive our boss. He’s been looking for his wife all day, and is very anxious. Please be understanding…’
The doctor examined her in Lang Lang’s arms, ‘It’s not a big deal; she just developed a high fever from being in the rain too long. Can you open her chest so I can listen to her breathing sounds?’ He said as he started to put on the stethoscope, but Lang Lang didn’t move.
‘Sir, I asked you expose her chest so I can listen to her breathing.’
There was no response, the doctor grew incensed, ‘Look, if you don’t want-’
‘Doctor, doctor, since it is not a big deal, lets not waste time, why don’t we look at her ankle. It looks really purple.’
Alas, this Lang Lang, who got angry with Li because he was merely chatting to Xiao Tu would definitely not let a male doctor see her exposed chest to examine.
The doctor did as Li bid and examined Xiao Tu’s foot, ‘Definitely, a sprain. We have a special ointment but we can only get it from the fracture clinic tomorrow. I will bandage the foot for now, and you may come back tomorrow for the medicine. In the meantime, change her out of her wet clothes.
Put her in a bay and we’ll give her an antipyretic IV. I will also prescribe some medications to take home with you.’
As soon as the doctor finished speaking, Lang Lang turned around and walked out without saying a word leaving Li to soothe the doctor’s ruffled feathers.
Zhao Tian met them holding dry clothes, ‘These are mine; you should change her in the car.’
Lang Lang nodded before taking the clothes and walking out. Zhao Tian didn’t follow, she knew he must be feeling bad, it was much better to deal with the practicalities.
Lang Lang sat in the back seat of the car with the pale lifeless Xiao Tu in his arms. As he gently took off her wet clothes, her body was unusually hot burning all the way to his heart. He hugged her tightly, wrapping her in his coat. He gently kissed her heated cheeks and ears, thinking nothing was more important than her in his arms.
Li and Zhao Tian got the room ready, but Lang Lang didn’t come back after a long while. Just as they were going to find them, he appeared with the re-dressed Xiao Tu.
‘Sir, could you please put the patient on the bed so we can give her the IV?
‘Do it this way.’
‘Sir, this…’
‘Hehe, nurse,’ Li interjected with a placating smile, ‘let’s do it like this; our boss’ wife got caught in the rain and is very cold – let the boss hold her to warm her up.’
The nurse, fascinated by Lang Lang’s beauty, readily agreed. Li breathing a sigh of relief while inwardly bemoaning the trouble Lang Lang was making go through to placate others.
The nurse waited until he got on the bed before taking Xiao Tu’s hand to insert the cannula.
‘Be gentle, don’t hurt her.’
‘Ah?’ the nurse looked up at the sound of his voice, and saw him staring at her coldly. She nodded an returned to inserting the needle as gently as possible, afraid of angering the domineering man.
Li and Zhao Tian sympathised with the nurse in their hearts. Fortunately, Xiao Tu was dead asleep or if she had even frowned a little the nurse would have been doomed.
Successfully completing the task and connecting the IV, the nurse threw a triumphant glance before walking out of the room. Zhao Tian and Li sat on the sofa opposite Lang Lang watching as he kissed her lips and face, but were gobsmacked, but did not dare stop him.
After a couple of minutes, Zhao Tian cleared her throat, ‘Ahem, the medicine looks quite bitter, I’ll go and buy some water and sweets so she can eat when she wakes.’ She got out of the chair and left the room, with Li following right after. They had enough of being disgusted to death.
Lang Lang held onto the IV tube to warm the fluid as it went into Xiao Tu, his heart didn’t settle until her fever subsided in the second half of the night.
‘Hmm…’ Xiao Tu moaned as she slowly regained consciousness. As she opened her eyes, she saw Lang Lang in her blurry vision looking unreal. She closed her eyes before opening them again.
It wasn’t a dream.
‘You finally woke up; do you feel uncomfortable? Are you thirsty? Hmm?’ He asked as he kissed her lips and held her hand.
Xiao Tu couldn’t distinguish between southeast or northwest for a while. When her brain finally woke up, she asked with reddened eyes, ‘I thought you didn’t want me?’
Lang Lang held her tightly, ‘I was just scaring you. How could I really not want you?’
But Xiao Tu got even more aggrieved, ‘But I sent you a text, and you didn’t reply. I waited for you all day, you didn’t come. I hurt my ankle, and I got rained on, and it was so cold…you’re hateful, you’re mean…!’ She cried.
Lang Lang held her hand afraid she’d pull out the cannula, ‘I am hateful and mean. I was too much. It’s my fault, don’t cry anymore. I’m sorry. I will never do that again. Please don’t cry.’
Xiao Tu cried for a bit, but she wasn’t a sentimental person, so the tears dried quickly, ‘Where am I anyway?’
‘You’re in a hospital, you reckless girl, you twisted your ankle, caught a fever and fainted. How could I leave you alone in peace?’ He said so softly it was like he was talking to himself.
Xiao Tu’s heart burst with joy. Falling ill was really worth it, letting them reunite!
Xiao sat comfortably in his arms and swung her legs, ‘You can’t break up again in the future!’ (Zuben: You seen to have forgotten you orchestrated this one.)
‘You said it first!’
‘Umm…either way, you can’t agree!’
‘Okay.’
‘Don’t be cruel to me again.’
‘I won’t.’
‘You can’t ignore my messages!’
‘I won’t.’
‘And…’ Lang Lang had been watching those sweet lips, wanting to kiss her. And he did, prying opened her teeth with his flexible tongue to deeply seduce her. He was only satisfied when he saw the soft blush steal across her face.
Just as they were about to kiss again, there was a cough breaking their romantic mood, ‘So sorry, Director, I didn’t mean to interrupt your reunion, I lost the game. Can the nurse take out the needle before you continue?’
Lang Lang was very composed, and he pulled away from Xiao Tu, but Xiao Tu shyly burrowed into his arms and dared not come out.
Oh my gosh, so embarrassing, she had forgotten she was in the hospital and Assistant Li and Zhao Tian were sitting next to them.
Lang Lang smiled at the little ostrich in his arms wanting to drag her out, but the more he played with her, the deeper she tried to burrow – determined not to come out.
Lang Lang raised his eyes and gave a gentle smile to the culprit. Assistant Li felt shiver go down his spine, he knew when Lang Lang smiled like this, he was going to make someone cry. The last time he smiled like this, the next day a manager was beautifully fired.
Fortunately, there were still kind-hearted people in the world,
‘Let Xiao Tu take her medicine first. We’ve got water and sweets.’ Zhao Tian smiled and handed the things over, casting a peaceful look at Li, who tried to calm down.
Lang Lang patiently coaxed Xiao Tu and she slowly emerged. She looked at Li and Zhao Tian, both reading a newspaper, and emerged fully.
‘Ugh, this medicine is so bitter. I don’t want it.’ There were not many women who weren’t soft, but with a man to coax them, women become more spoiled. Xiao Tu was a touch girl with no squeamishness, but now that there was Lang Lang, she has to work hard to take medicine.
‘Be good, you’ll get something delicious after drinking.’
‘Really? Alright, I’ll drink it now!’ She immediately took the medicine from him, pinched her nose and drank it down, ‘Hurry, give me something delicious!’
Lang Lang smiled, pinched her nose, and took a sweet from the bag and give it to her, ‘You’re a liar, what so delicious about this?’
Lang Lang glanced at Zhao Tian in confusion, but she had a playful expression on her face.
‘This candy is very sour when you eat it, it only gets sweet after a while. I’m not going to eat it, it’s so sour,’ she grabbed Lang Lang’s shirt while complaining, ‘You tricked me into taking the medicine.’ (Zuben: I guess the people reading the paper also have newspaper pieces in their ears)
Lang Lang tore open the pack and put the sweet in his mouth, after sucking it for a while, he said to Xiao Tu, ‘Open your mouth,’
Xiao Tu stared at him dumbfounded, before opening her mouth. He lowered his head and pressed his lips against hers slipping the sweet into her mouth.
‘How is it? It’s not sour now, right?’ He asked as he rubbed her full lips with his thumb, eyes gleaming.
Xiao Tu blushed, the sweet in her mouth was warm, she wriggled around like a puppy.
The two onlookers sat staring at the pair while holding the newspaper upside down, one had a smile of success, the other looked ill. They both put down the newspaper and quietly left the room.
‘Miss Zhao,’ Li ran after Zhao Tian as she’d gone ahead whilst he closed the door, ‘Thank you for the save, otherwise, I wouldn’t have had a good end. I’m really grateful.
Zhao Tian gave a non-committal smile and carried on.
Li thought perhaps he wasn’t being sincere enough, ‘How about I treat you to dinner? You can chose the place, or what to eat. With one word from you, I will lead the whole family through fire and water.’
Zhao Tian stopped and gave a cunning smile, ‘I didn’t really help you, I just wanted to see someone feeding candy, ne? Don’t follow me anymore, I’m off to see my skeleton friends~’ with that parting word, she trotted off.
Li suddenly felt a gust of wind. He felt mentally disabled; he should have known this wealthy girl wasn’t that kind. Wealthy people were terrifying!
58 Dilemma
I don’t know who said it, but after a fight between couples, the most effective way to eliminate enmity is to roll in bed.
Lang Lang really wanted to. Xiao Tu was fine after her short bout of fever; she jumped up and down like a monkey. Heartlessly fidgeting in his arms while the drove back to the hotel. He had to hold her tighter, while his lower abdomen tightened. When they got to the hotel, he ignored all protests and carried her to his room. He shut the door firmly, and pressed her against it to kiss her.
Of course, yellowy Xiao Tu wanted it very much, but when he stripped off her blouse and stroked her waist with his heated hand, she remembered the intensity of his lovemaking, and thought about her foot. She got a little apprehensive, and stopped the hand sliding up to her breast.
Lang Lang paused and lifted his head from her tender neck, to see the concern in her yes. He quickly calmed down his temper, and took her to bed. They went to sleep innocently.
In the early hours of the morning, Xiao Tu was awakened from her sweet sleep by someone pinching her face and lifting the blanket. She stubbornly refused to open her eyes, clutching the pillow tighter. She was dreaming about braised pork, drooling both inside her dream and in real-life. But she began to feel a heat running up her body, and her breast was held. As a feisty young girl, she opened her eyes to find a refreshingly handsome face smiling like a criminal. She looked down at his hand, which was under her t-shirt slowly fondling the plump soft flesh.
Xiao Tu was very sleepy, and couldn’t care less about being shy, she pulled his hand out and asked angrily, ‘What are you doing so early in the morning? I didn’t sleep properly until midnight – I’m so sleepy. La!’
Lang Lang laughed and lay atop her, and said in her ear, ‘Good girl, let’s go to the hospital and get the medicine for your foot. You can sleep after.’
She was choked by him because she was lying on her side, she couldn’t push him away. So she had to shout, ‘I’m not going, I don’t need to. My foot will get better soon.’ Come on, she was raised energetically since she was a child, she never cared about minor injuries. A twisted ankle is nothing!
‘Oh?’ Lang Lang rose from her and left the bed, ‘I also got you a lot of breakfast.’ he started making his way to the door, ‘You don’t have to eat since you want to sleep. I’ll share it with the-’
Xiao Tu shot up. With a leap she got out of bed, forgetting she had a twisted ankle and fell to the floor with a plop. Lang Lang rushed over, worried when he saw her wincing. He quickly lifted her back into bed and examined her carefully.
‘Can’t you save me some trouble? Why are you so clumsy!’
Xiao Tu wanted to protest, but on second thought, she felt that she didn’t have any reason to give, so she just shut her mouth.
When Lang Lang found that she was alright, he was relieved. He smiled and pinched her rosy lips, ‘If you keep pouting like this, I won’t give you food.’
Hearing this, she quickly smiled and tried to please him, trying to seem obedient so she would be fed.
Once she ate, Xiao Tu was even sleepier, she quickly limped back to his room while he put away the trays. Unfortunately, before she got far, the world spun around and she was thrown over his shoulder.
‘What are you doing? Put me down.’ Xiao Tu kicked her legs and hit his back, but Lang Lang smacked her butt, ‘Behave, if you struggle again, I’ll finish you off right here!’
She stilled and he carried her off to the hospital.
After the medication was applied and her ankle rebound, Xiao Tu was very happy. Lang Lang carried her hiter and yon, and she enjoyed the queen-mother treated comfortably. But when they got back to the hotel, and he carried her past her and Zhen Zhen’s room,
‘Hey wait, where are we going?’
Lang Lang pretended he did not hear her and took her back to his room. She pinched his waist and he subconsciously dropped her/
‘Why are you so crazy?!’ Lang Lang asked angrily when she looked up at him grinning and rubbing her legs.
Xiao Tu fired back, ‘How dare you speak against me! You didn’t listen when I told you to stop.’
‘Why should I stop where I have nothing to do?!’ He took back the hand he held out to pull her up and folded his arms and turned away from her. He knew what she was thinking; she was too embarrassed to move directly to his room which such emphasis on sex, and neglecting her friend. But what a pity, his best past time was to destroy her plans.
Xiao Tu was happy when she saw his awkward look. He was usually calculating, so she didn’t expect him to be childish, which made him seem cuter to her. She reached up and held onto his trouser leg, ‘Don’t be angry, Zhen Zhen has been unhappy this days. She has always stood by me when I was sad, I have to support her now, can’t I?’
She looked at him imploringly and pleaded until she got approval. She was allowed to go back to her room on condition that she would give him all he wanted when her foot got better.
Lang Lang lifted her off the floor, and carried her back to her room. He whined for a while before leaving reluctantly. Xiao Tu knocked on the door before opening the door to behold a shocking sight,
‘Zhen Zhen, I really like you! No! I love you! Marry me, Zhen Zhen, marry me!’ Xiao Qi was wearing a tuxedo, on bended knee before Zhen Zhen holding out a large bouquet of roses. Zhen Zhen was sitting on a chair before the floor-to-ceiling window, calmy drinking a cup of coffee.
‘Oh no,’ she said blandly, ‘it’s a courtship.’
Xiao Tu couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
Xiao Qi saw Xiao Tu and quickly stood up and greeted her; he had been begging for over an hour but she had not agreed.
‘Sister Tutu, help me! I really like Zhen Zhen. I love her! Tell her to agree to marry me!’
Just as Xiao Tu was about to respond, Zhen Zhen said coldly, ‘You’ve been talking for so long, is there anything new?’
Hearing his goddess finally speak, he thew himself back on his knee, ‘Yes! Yes, as long as you agree, I can say whatever you want!’
‘Tell me why you like me.’
Xiao Tu winced, and secretly scolded Zhen Zhen for making things difficult; how could a little boy answer such a ridiculous, illusory question?
Xiao Qi scratched his head innocently, ‘Um...well.. because you...because you’re very smart! Hmm...that doesn’t seem to be it...Oh I just like you! I like you, okay?’
As Zhen Zhen looked at the innocent smile on his face and a strange emotion crept into her heart. A long buried memory was dredged up; she remembered holding her mother’s hand desperately pleading, trying to find reasons for her not to leave. Her mother smiled faintly, and shook off her hand.
She put aside the cup, and walked up to Xiao Qi and pulled him up from the ground. She patted the imaginary dust on his clothes, like a sister caring for her naughty brother.
‘Xiao Qi, I don’t really want you to give me a reason. If I liked you as you like me, I wouldn’t need a reason to convince myself. Do you understand?’
Xiao Qi looked her her in confusion and shook his head. Zhen Zhen gave gentle smile, ‘It doesn’t matter, it took me a long time to understand it. You go back and think about it.’
Xiao Qi was coaxed out the door in a daze, and the door shut firmly in his face. Xiao Qi limped to happily and patted Zhen Zhen, ‘Wow! Nowadays, we are becoming more literary! I couldn’t understand anything you say!’
‘You never understand anything I say.’
Damn! But it was a fact. Xiao Tu gnashed her teeth.
‘Why are you not having out in bed with your man now that you’ve made up? Oh, I forgot...you are always exhausted after. Tsk tsk, you can see how painful it is not to eat? I really sympathise with you miserable couple.’
‘Zhen Zhen!’ Xiao Tu grinned while pretending to hit her. The two women burst into laughter and collapsed on the bed. The didn’t stop until they were out of breath.
‘Zhen Zhen, I don’t think Xiao Qi is joking.’
‘I know.’
‘Aren’t you make it clear to him?’ Xiao Tu asked puzzled by her indifference. Zhen Zhen had always been lively, and Xiao Tu was a cute younger colleague, she was worried that something will happen if she let it carry on longer.
‘He’s just confused right now, he will figure it out sooner or later...just like me.’
Xiao Tu heard the sadness in her words, ‘Are you serious this time?’
Zhen Zhen did not respond for such a long while Xiao Tu thought she had fallen asleep. She turned to see Zhen Zhen staring into space. Xiao Tu poked her gently, and she shook herself.
‘What can I do? If you know there will not be a result, you shouldn’t start.’ Zhen said quietly, but her tone hit Xiao Tu’s heart heavily. Zhen Zhen seemed so far away from her at this moment, just like when she just entered college and first met her.
But after the gastroenteritis incident, they became really good friend. Zhen Zhen followed Xiao Tu, made crazy noises, had many boyfriends. But Xiao Tu had known that she wasn’t serious about any of them, but this time, she seemed to have fallen for this mystery guy.
‘But if you don’t try, how would you know the result?’
Zhen Zhen laughed sarcastically, ‘No wonder he likes you so much, he said the exact same thing.’
Xiao Tu blinked in confusion, thinking about that sentence...was it Lang Lang? She shot up, ‘Are you in love with Lang Lang?!’
Zhen Zhen rolled her eyes heavenward, once again confirming that someone’s IQ was in the minus. Without responding, she got into the bed, pulled the quilt over and took a nap.
Xiao Tu couldn’t calm down, ah ah ah what should I do? Her best friend was in love with her man!
‘Zhen Zhen! What should I do? Do you really like him that much? No wonder you’re so sad!’ She cried rocking Zhen Zhen’s motionless body back and forth, but Zhen Zhen did not respond, so she kept rocking her until Zhen Zhen sat up and grabbed her phone to make a call,
‘Come and pick up your woman, or don’t blame me for being rude!’
That certain someone did not waste time, he hurried over after handing up and came to carry Xiao Tu away.
Zhen Zhen lay in bed alone, thinking about the past and present, ‘Tutu, things are not as simple as you think. Things I thought I had forgotten roll around in my mind from time to time, never letting me completely forget.’
Just try? Was it really that simple? She had no courage. Not to mention, there was Xiao Tu in the middle.
